Multiple fax modems/com ports

Tom Cook Feb 29, 2012 10:29PM EST

I have always used FaxMan to handle just one phone line. Now I have added another com port that is attached to modems. I call "FaxAddDevice(m_pInfo, 0);", that, from what I understand, is supposed to see the new modem and add it to the list. Sometimes it detects the second modem and sometimes it doesn't. When it does detext the modem, it still won't use it.

How can I determine what's preventing the detection and, when it is detected, what could possibly be precenting FaxMan from using the COM port.

Hi Tom,

FaxAddDevice() with a 0 param will do an autodetect which will add all modems Faxman can find. If a modem is in use by another application then Faxman will not be able to open it and hence will not find it. Generally things like MS Fax, RAS Service may have ports open.

If you have recent versions of FaxMan you can look in the Faxman*.log file (in the same dir as the faxman4.exe) and see what happened during the autodetect.

Keep in mind FaxMan persists the modem configuration so your app doesnt need to call FaxAddDevice every time it starts up, only when the modem configuration has changed.

Assuming a modem is configured to send then FaxMan will automatically use it if needed. Note that if you have a bunch of faxes all going to a given fax number FaxMan wlll only send those on 1 port at a time.
