VMware ThinApp imtwain#.ocx

Rick Bankers Oct 26, 2011 09:00AM EDT

As you may know VMware ThinApp is a very popular application virtualization software. We have an application using imtwain ActiveX to scan documents but once the application is packaged with ThinApp and the scanner imTwain ActiveX is called it launches the installer for the scanners. Have any of your customers found solutions to using imtwain activex with VMware ThinApp? And if so, can you give me the specifics?

Hello,

Sorry but we dont have much experience with thinapp. The Twain control when it runs calls the twain_32.dll which is the twain data source manager, it doesn''t call any scanner install code. What exactly is running when this occurs ?

What type of scanner are you using ?

We are using a fujitsu and an HP scanner. The application launches a scanner dialog. You click scan and typically the twain called scanner dialog appears for that model scanner. For some reason when the application is packaged with thinapp it doesn't detect the scanner is completely installed and therefore stars msi repair for the scanner.

Can you give me an example vbs script that uses the imtwain#.ocx to call the scanner software so I could test? The program I have is very step intensive and it would be easier to test with a simple program.

Thanks for the quick response too! :)

Hi Rick,

We dont have a VBS script for the Twain control but let me know your email address and I'll send you a quick VB6 sample that just scans, you'll just need the Twain control registered and the VB6 runtime which is on almost all machines.

After reviewing the Thinapp info from vmware it looks like you'll need to check with them to see how you can package the scanner drivers properly in your thinapp image. The twain data source manager sounds like it is installed OK otherwise you would get an error from our Twain control. Its the scanner drivers themselves that arent installed properly.

Thanks for your interest in our products and please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Sean

Thanks for the help. I included my email address in the question and answer dialog. I don't want to put my email in the post because of spammers. If you can't access that information I can put my alternative email address in the post and you can send it there. Thanks so much for the help!

I forgot that we don't accept .exe files via email. Can you email it to gozzgug@yahoo.com?

Thanks,
Rick
